Is your quilt top ready for the longarm?
Here is what is required to get the best results from a longarm quilter.

-
If your quilt top has many exposed seams on the outside edge of the top, I recommend a stay stitch 1/8" from the edge on all four sides. This will prevent seams from opening up.
-
Make sure the top is well pressed and seams are as flat as possible.
-
Trim all hanging threads from the back and edges as much as you can. Dark threads will show through light areas of the quilt.
-
Mark the top edge with a safety pin and note.
-
Please ensure that your quilt top is clean and free of offensive odors.
-
The backing needs to be at least 8 inches larger then the top in width and length. If your top is 60 x 80, the backing should be no smaller that 68 x 88. It is preferred that any pieced backs have the seem horizontal to the quilt top. Use 1/2 inch seams and remove the selveges from the seam. Selveges on the outside edges are acceptable.
-
Wideback backings, 108 inches wide, are a great choice. Some widebacks are stiff and have had a lot of sizing added during manufacturing. This stiffness can cause the needle to puncture the fibers rather than separate the fibers. Washing the wideback before longarming will improve the stitching results.
-
All backings should be pressed flat and any seams pressed open.
-
Your batting should be 6 to 8 inches larger in width and length. I currently carry Hobbs 80/20 in queen width(90 inches) and Quilters Dream Request in queen width(90 inches). If you are providing your own batting ensure it is high quality.
